FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS
Here, we answer some of the most common questions couples have when looking for a wedding photographer. If you have any other questions that aren’t covered here, feel free to contact us through our contact page, and we’ll be happy to help with anything you need.
How many photographers should you hire for a wedding?
Typically, wedding photography packages include 1 or 2 photographers. What’s the difference between having 1 or 2 photographers? Mainly, it’s about capturing more moments and achieving different perspectives, which greatly enhances the final album. That’s why, although 1 experienced photographer is capable of delivering an excellent wedding album, it’s always recommended to hire 2 photographers. This way, one can focus on taking photos of the guests while the other focuses on the couple. Or one can capture the action involving the couple while the other catches the reaction of the family. Another example is when the couple exits the ceremony—one can capture the exit from the front, while the other captures it from behind. It’s not absolutely essential, but it certainly helps to create a much better wedding album.
How many hours does a photographer work at a wedding?
Wedding photographers in Spain cover the entire wedding, from the preparations of the couple to the party, which usually amounts to around 10 hours of coverage. Some weddings are shorter, and others last a bit longer. But generally, between 8 and 11 hours is the norm. However, that’s just the wedding day. In reality, the hours a photographer dedicates to a wedding are much more. This includes the hours spent preparing for the wedding, the time it takes to travel to and from the wedding location (which can sometimes add up to 4 or 5 hours round trip), the selection of photographs (another 2 to 4 hours), and the editing, which can take another 15 to 20 hours, depending on the photographer. So, when you add it all up, a photographer dedicates an average of about 30 to 35 hours to each wedding.
How long does it take for a wedding photographer to deliver the photos?
The time it takes for a photographer to deliver the wedding photos can vary, but generally, it ranges from 1 to 3 months. This is because each wedding involves many hours of editing, and the wedding season is often concentrated within just a few months.
When is the couple´s photo session done?
The couple’s photo session usually takes place right after the ceremony, taking advantage of the time when guests are moving from the ceremony to the reception. However, there’s also the option of having a photo session before the ceremony. This is common in American weddings, for example. The couple does what is known as the “First Look,” where they see each other in their wedding attire for the first time, and it’s a perfect opportunity to have a calm photo session.
How to choose a wedding photographer?
Choosing a wedding photographer can be challenging because you ultimately have to trust what you see on a website or Instagram, and you can’t be sure if those four or five beautiful photos from each wedding truly reflect the full gallery you’ll receive. Plus, there are probably several photographers you like.
My advice is to do two things. First, make sure the wedding photographer has been shooting weddings for more than five years. Experience is essential to ensure they can handle any situation that might arise on your wedding day.
From there, choose the one who resonates with you the most. In the end, it’s all about feelings. Two photographers with different styles can be equally talented—it often comes down to personal taste more than anything else.
How far in advance should you book a wedding photographer?
Wedding photographers are usually booked about a year in advance. Sometimes even earlier, but if you want to secure the photographer you really want for your date, you should book at least a year ahead.
Of course, some couples book their photographer just a few months before the wedding, but since available dates are limited, the sooner you lock in yours, the better.
What types of wedding photography styles are there?
When choosing a wedding photographer, it’s important to understand their style, as there are different types of wedding photography.
Photojournalistic Wedding Photographer
This type of photographer captures moments without interfering at all in what’s happening. Their approach is purely documentary.
Natural Style Wedding Photographer
These photographers also capture moments with minimal intervention but may occasionally give subtle guidance to the couple or guests to encourage certain actions.
Editorial Style Wedding Photographer
This style focuses on creating images that resemble those seen in fashion magazines. This doesn’t necessarily mean posed photos—it’s often more about creating a certain atmosphere or feeling rather than striking a pose.
Aesthetic Wedding Photographer
This photographer prioritizes aesthetics, capturing moments from an artistic perspective that turns each photo into a small visual masterpiece.
Film Wedding Photographer
Regardless of their style, film wedding photographers use analog cameras to capture the wedding, offering a timeless and unique look.
In the end, most wedding photographers blend elements from different styles. There’s no better or worse style—it’s all about personal taste and preferences.
