Planning a wedding is so much more than following a checklist. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create an unforgettable experience—not just for you and your partner, but for everyone who’s there with you that day. And that’s not something you achieve just by picking a menu or a dress. It happens when you dream up out-of-the-box ideas, surprising moments, and details that truly move people.
I’ve had the good fortune to be part of over 300 weddings, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: the most memorable weddings are the ones that break the mold. That’s why I’ve put together this list of 21 tips for planning an original wedding, packed with ideas that will truly make your day unique.
Let’s get started.
1. Live music in every part of the wedding
Don’t settle for a playlist and a Bluetooth speaker. Live music changes everything. Imagine a string quartet welcoming your guests to the ceremony, a rumba band livening up the cocktail hour, a jazz band during the meal, or a saxophonist setting the mood for dessert. Every stage of your wedding can have its own sound—and that changes everything. Music has the power to shape the mood, which is why it’s so important at weddings.
2. Treat the lighting like it’s magic
Lighting is everything. Not just so your photos look incredible (which they will), but to create atmosphere and emotion. Go for warm, enveloping lighting at dinner, hang string lights over the tables, set up a chill-out area with lanterns or soft lights. And for the party… let it explode with colorful lights, moving spotlights, or even a light show in sync with the music.
3. Surprise your guests with something unexpected
Think of something no one will see coming. McDonald’s burgers as a late-night snack? A mini concert before the party? A secret corner with a sensory experience? An interactive photo booth with custom props? Everyone loves a good surprise! Or keep it simple and deeply personal: a handwritten letter for each guest as a thank you.
4. Set aside moments of downtime for you and your partner
This tip isn’t on most lists… but it’s vital! Your wedding day will fly by, and it’s non-stop. So I recommend you include at least two breaks for just the two of you in the schedule. It could be 10 minutes before the cocktail hour, or a quiet moment before dinner to breathe, toast privately, and say, “We’re married!”
5. Create a space for kids
If you’re inviting children, think of them too. Set up a kids’ area with games, coloring, storybooks, and professional childcare. This isn’t just great for the kids—it lets their parents relax and truly enjoy the wedding.
6. Hire an officiant who truly connects with you
A ceremony without soul can undo all your hard work. But with a great officiant—someone who knows you, speaks from the heart, and can move (and make people laugh)—the start of your wedding will be a show.
7. The ceremony exit: make it epic
Forget petals or rice. If you want a movie-worthy moment, use at least 10 confetti cannons. The effect is incredible, both live and in the photos. It’ll be a WOW moment—one everyone remembers and you’ll want to frame.
8. Create an original seating plan
Forget boring name cards. Make your seating plan part of the décor: a mural of vintage postcards, a display of floating frames, a wall of antique keys with each guest’s name… Let the seating plan become one more wedding experience.
9. Always have a plan B for everything
It doesn’t matter if you’re getting married in August and it hasn’t rained in 50 years. The weather is unpredictable. So make sure you have a plan B for the ceremony, the cocktail hour, and the party. Sometimes you don’t need a complete change—just having awnings, tents, or covered areas that match the vibe of your wedding can save the day.
10. Plan a second photo session at sunset
This tip is pure gold. I always recommend setting aside 15 minutes at sunset for a second couple’s session. The golden light at the end of the day is magical—so much more intimate and special.
11. Write and read your vows during the ceremony
Writing something from the heart and telling everyone what makes your partner special… that’s something you’ll never forget. It will make your ceremony truly special and become one of your favorite moments of the day.
12. Personalize the key moments with your own story
The entrance to the reception, the first dance, the cake cutting… all these moments can have something that’s uniquely yours. A song that means something to you, an improvised dance, a toast with a funny anecdote… These are the details that move people.
13. Offer a memorable culinary experience
It’s not about choosing the most expensive menu, but the most authentic. How about dishes from your childhood? A food truck with your favorite street food? A live cooking station during the cocktail hour? Think of the food as another way to tell your story.
14. Use natural elements in the décor
Branches, wildflowers, fruits, tree trunks… Nature brings beauty, freshness, and personality. And not just for table décor. You can use it at the altar, for the seating plan, on your stationery… plus it helps create a more sustainable atmosphere.
15. Think of a unique entrance as newlyweds
Break with tradition. How about entering the reception with a flash mob, or dancing in with your entire crew? Or making your entrance with an epic song and cold fireworks? The entrance can set the tone for everything that comes next.
16. Leave room for improvisation
Don’t plan every second. Build in some breathing room in your timeline. If someone wants to say a few words, if you suddenly feel like dancing in the middle of the cocktail hour, if you want to take a special photo… make sure there’s space for the spontaneous.
17. Create a “hora loca” no one will forget
Plan a change of pace for the party: fun props, a new DJ, costumes, performers, dancers… Something that surprises everyone, energizes the dance floor, and gets everyone to let loose.
18. Set up a stylish chill-out area
Not everyone will want to dance all night. Create a cozy corner with sofas, cushions, blankets, and soft lighting where people can chat, relax, or even enjoy a quiet cocktail.
19. Offer options for non-drinkers
Your guests will really appreciate this thoughtful touch. A cart with homemade lemonades, mocktails, kombuchas, iced teas… Make sure those who don’t drink alcohol can also toast with something delicious and special.
20. End the wedding with an unforgettable gesture
The ending matters too. Maybe a surprise gift for your guests, a message from you projected on a big screen, or a farewell breakfast. Think about how you want people to remember your day… and tie it all up with a beautiful final touch.
