History of Castell de Tamarit
Castell de Tamarit has its origins in the 11th century, when the lords of Claramunt ordered the construction of this imposing castle overlooking Cala Jovera. Later, the Claramunt family joined forces with the Montoliu family through marriage, which was the most common way to forge alliances in the Middle Ages. From this union came a new dominant surname, Tamarit. And that’s how Castell de Tamarit got its current name.
Built in Romanesque style, the castle was active for long periods and served as a lookout against potential pirate threats. In the 14th century, it passed into the hands of the Archbishopric of Tarragona, which retained ownership until the 19th century. In 1916, a wealthy businessman from Chicago purchased the castle, restored it, and made it his home.
The magnate in question was Charles Deering, a man who had inherited an empire built around agricultural machinery through the Deering Harvester Company. This company employed over 7,000 workers, becoming a true industrial giant. In fact, in 1902, the company merged with its biggest competitor to form a new entity that dominated 85% of the agricultural machinery market. After serving as the company’s president for several years, Deering retired and moved to Spain, where he eventually purchased Castell de Tamarit.
The castle remained in the Deering family until the 1980s, when his grandson, James, sold it to the real estate company Sociedad Inmobiliaria Betren.
